Seminar Abstract: The preliminary results from a recent study show that traffic fatality varies by an order of magnitude from one type of network to the other and strongly supports the idea that street patterns plays a huge role in determining traffic safety. For 50 years in the USA, engineering practice has propagated a dendritic street layout pattern. This pattern of development is a sharp break from the history of street design in the USA prior to 1950, when the pattern was a connected, fine-grained network of streets. This evolving pattern can be seen to varying extent in all American communities, including Burlington, VT. Research suggests that understanding the implication of these patterns might be one of the keys to planning communities that are safer, use less energy and emit fewer greenhouse gases.
