Jon Kaplan, an active VT ITE member and ITE VTrans Liason, was invited to participate in an AASHTO/FHWA/NCHRP (National Cooperative Highway Research Program) international scan on the topic of pedestrian and bicycle safety. The official name of the scan tour is “Survey of Innovative Pedestrian and Bicyclist Infrastructure Improvements and Policies to Increase Safety and Mobility”.   

He joins 11 other transportation professionals from around the U.S. to tour 5 European countries (Denmark, Sweden, Switzerland, Germany and the U.K.) to be briefed by transportation officials on their policies and practices and to observe facilities first hand.  A big focus of this tour is on implementation and Jon is the DOT representative on the implementation team.  Upon return, they will be working on a report, implementation plan, and making presentations about the trip.
